PERSONAL NOTE
The first thing that attracted me when I was taking her photos was how she was shaping her body, the movements, her hair. I waited for the next shape to emerge and I pressed the shutter, hiding myself as much as possible (or pretending to photograph something else). I didn’t want her to stop what she was doing or diverge her energy into “posing”.
For me, as the observer, her whole “game“ in the water was powerful, but it did not hit me at that moment why.
Back in my workspace, as I reviewed the photographs an uneasy feeling came over me.I saw in her body unwanted movements, I saw her struggles, I saw time, but in a different way- maybe in an unrealistic way as the stillness of each photo allowed me to penetrate in a deeper view of “the whole picture”. I saw her fight the odds, the possibilities of what was coming next and I knew that I was not just recording the actual day’s events, I knew what I was feeling, now, -that real life was reflected in my photos…or at least that is what I chose to see. She was in a tumultuous time in her life, going through a lot of emotions and struggles with friendships.
We were waiting, like active spectators, advising her at times, but letting her deal with her emotions, reactions and consequences. There was a clear parallel to what I was observing in my photos from that day in the pool, and her real life. The question that came to me was how did she will EMERGE from that? “Emerging” was the word that held the symbolic meaning of everything in these photographs. After many years of struggles, woman are finally emerging to a “new state”, manhood’s view is emerging to a different stage, and we find ourselves in a continuous process that makes us emerge. It is that process that attracts me; the part of the journey that reveals continuous movements, even when it seems still, emerging and transforming itself, if the desire and needs are working together. My series of “Emerging” will grow and change as I am able to capture the intimate moments and time when we, as humans, continue to evolve into a new stage.
